Arthouse Cinema - Matakana

As Auckland expands, many settle on the eastern coastline, north of the city, to enjoy the sun and the beaches. Within Matakana’s enriched dairy farming community, they keenly anticipated the prospect of an ‘arthouse’ cinema. Glazed shells on peaked roofs glimmer in the sunset rays among the rolling grassed hills. Within, like North African tents, inspired by Walter Nash’s Brighton Pavilion, red curtains drape full height from a central gold chandelier. They change plane down the roof and wall planes divided by curved ornate dado at the changes in plane. Curved bands of seats in these intimate auditoria surround and focus on the main screen, Austrian blind, awaiting their opening for the first performance.
